England, with its iconic landmarks, historic homes and picturesque countryside has always been an ideal place for filming. Now that the hit Netflix series ‘You’ has fixed its base in British land, this gives us all the more reasons to fawn over this stunning country. The show – You, is an American psychological thriller based on the stories by author Caroline Kepnes. The story manoeuvres around the dark fantasies and faux idealist life led by the story’s main character Joe Goldberg – played by Penn Badgley. Previously we witnessed the first three seasons of him wandering through the streets and landmarks of New York, Los Angeles and ultimately to the fictional suburb of California’s San Francisco. Now, in season 4 of You, Goldberg makes his way to England to start a new life as Jonathan Moore – a Literature professor. From the vibrant and bustling city of London to the serene bliss of Black Park woods, the show has seamlessly managed to capture all the beautiful, scenic locations which the country has to offer. So, we may not quite agree with Joe’s ideals, but we definitely dig his choice of locale! Read on as we take you behind the scenes of You’s filming locations across England.
IS ACTUALLY – KNEBWORTH HOUSE
What is – Hampsie House
In early episodes of You, Joe and his friends are seen heading to the country to enjoy a quaint weekend getaway at Lady Phoebe’s family home viz. Hampsbridge House. The “Hampsie” as we know it is actually the Tudor mansion in Hertfordshire viz. Knebworth House. Both the property’s magnificent exteriors and interiors were featured on screen.
IS ACTUALLY – ROYAL HOLLOWAY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON
What is – Darcy College
While professor Joe’s workplace – Darcy college is fictional, its quintessential university backdrop is very much real. The quad, the literature department and almost every Darcy college setting is actually the Surrey campus of Royal Holloway, University of London.
IS ACTUALLY – LINCOLN’S INN
What is – Darcy College Library
The Darcy college library featured in the series is actually portrayed by the Honourable Society Of Lincoln’s Inn. The glimpses of the historic property can be seen in the scenes between Jonathan and his intellectual student Nadia. The venue stands tall under a 600-year-old revered history of qualified professionals such as barristers and judges among others as described by its website.
IS ACTUALLY – FOUR SEASONS HOTEL
What is – Phoebe’s Flat
The super-rich, entitled heiress Phoebe will settle for no less and her stunning flat perfectly explains it. The plush Four Seasons Hotel at London’s Trinity Square served as Phoebe’s chic home in You. This is where the exterior and interior shots of her house were filmed.
BLACK PARK COUNTRY PARK
This beautiful country park in England is a popular filming location. While several Hampsie scenes were shot at Knebworth House, the dense woods where the squad goes for hunting and where professor Jonathan is hunted are actually the Black Park woods.
ST. PANCRAS INTERNATIONAL
As Joe stalks Marienne (Tati Gabrielle) all the way from Paris to London, Joe is shown spying on her at St. Pancras railway station. Well, no wonder that the venue looked so real as it was filmed in the actual location of St. Pancras station. Here, you can board a Eurostar to France.
